The first minister was Thomas Bartlett, an Englishman who had crossed the Atlantic three times. The original church building was a one room sanctuary located 1/2 mile west of the present church, and until 2007 served as the clubhouse for the Hendricks county golf course. The structure was built for $1,075 in 1869 and a remodeling program was completed in 1884. The "little church by the side of the road" as it was popularly known served the community for nearly a century before plans were made to build a new and larger church to serve the growing community.
In 1960, three acres of land were purchased from Virgil and Stella Mullens for $3,000 and a new church building (the current multi-purpose room and basement below it) was built for $85,000. Ground breaking services were held March 12, 1961 and consecration services were held December 16th of that same year.
In 1966, Lloyd and Marian Covey donated land for a parsonage 1/4 mile east of the new church building. That parsonage was sold some years later after a new parsonage was built in 1977 on land adjacent to the church.
Ground breaking for a church addition to provide space for classrooms, restrooms, and offices for the pastor and church secretary occurred on April 26, 1981, using a one-horse plow pulled by all of the people present. Russel Kerr, a conference architect, and carpenter Maynard Payne of Shelbyville, built the addition using largely volunteer labor from our church and other area churches. Tiny Groninger, Plainfield UMC volunteered to dig the basement and Jerry Owens was in charge of basement blocks, under-proofing and ditching. The UMW under President Joanna Sell, providing refreshments and lunch for the volunteer construction labor each day. Furnishings for the offices were donated by Clint & Phyllis Myers, Harold & Kathryn Thompson, and Margaret Thompson in memory of their parents, and a new piano was donated by Ruth Davis in memory of her mother. Consecration services were held October 18, 1981.
In October 1984, four acres of land was purchased just north of the church for future expansion and recreational facilities.
Bartlett Chapel has grown from a tiny church by the side of the road to a friendly and caring spiritual congregation of approximately 300. Its facilities comprise a beautiful new sanctuary with seating for about 700, an educational unit, parsonage, picnic and recreational area on 12 acres of land.
None of this could have been possible without faith, patience, the support of our ancestors, and the help of God, together with years of love, working together, and prayer. And, for all this we say "THANK YOU GOD, WE ARE SO BLESSED!" AMEN.
